it was a big problem when i tried to install gentoo with their live media on usb stick. that's how i discovered the workaround (unplug and plug back in) and the bug itself. i installed fedora gnome just to make sure the bug is reproducible -- which it is. the usb-bug.txt file demonstrates that.
