Any way to copy the EXIF data across (date taken, GPS location etc)?

I’d like to, and I’ve looked into this before. You might expect there is a simple way, but it seemed to me at the time that WIC did not make this easy. Instead, it seemed that the code would need to extract values individually by multiple names/aliases and possibly convert them along the way. I’ve done something similar on a previous project and it was quite messy. If I can find an efficient way to do this here, I will add it.

Exiftool supports r/w for both heic/heif and jpg.

I'm dealing with this due to iOS storing images as HEIC, and using OneDrive for cloud storage. On my Windows systems, working with HEIC is terrible (e.g. the Windows Photos app refuses to save changes to images, like rotation or crop, even with MS's HEIF/HEIC add-on). I'm using this script and exiftool to find all HEIC files, convert them to jpeg, apply the EXIF metadata, and delete the original. Unfortunately I found the iOS setting to store as jpeg months after many images were taken. What a pain!

I wish I would have know that this issue existed before I modified my workflow. Thankfully, I found the same setting you referred to in the iPhone.

For anyone else reading this, I know the free CopyTrans program will convert AND retain EXIF data. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to automate that conversion process so back to JPG I go.

Thanks for the powershell script. I have integrated it into an app I am developing wherein I convert a .heic file to a thumbnail.jpg for display purposes. (I tweaked your code to reduce the size of the generated image). However, when I use exiftool to validate the format of the .jpg file, I get the following warning:
"Warning : Missing required JPEG IFD0 tag 0x0213 YCbCrPositioning".
While it is only a warning, the .jpg does get displayed properly.
Just thought I would share to see if there might be fix for this.

No idea; since I posted this I went back to HEIC and started using Immich to view my photos. The reason I wanted to convert the photos was I wanted to view them in Plex (which didn't/doesn't support HEIC).
