Eclipse RCP 2026-06 multiple unfounded "One or more cycles were detected"

• I verified I can reproduce this issue against latest Integration Build of Eclipse SDK

Steps to reproduce

From a fresh installation and clean workspace:

• Clone https://github.com/elexis/elexis-3-core

I expected: it to work like in Eclipse 2026-03

But got: lots of

One or more cycles were detected in the build path of project 'ch.elexis.core.eigendiagnosen'. The paths towards the cycle and cycle are:

• I understand reporting an issue to this OSS project does not mandate anyone to fix it. Other contributors may consider the issue, or not, at their own convenience. The most efficient way to get it fixed is that I fix it myself and contribute it back as a good quality patch to the project.

Does this also happen when you launch the IDE with -Dpde.addTransitiveDependenciesWithForbiddenAccess=false? If so, this might be one of the side effects reported in eclipse-pde/eclipse.pde#2244 and better suited for the PDE project.

This error also appeared in mylyn's development environment and in that case there really was a cycle and it really was a good idea to fix it. I expect here too there is really a cycle that you'd best fix it rather than try to suppress it with a system property.

Thanks Ed. I tried for an hour to find the cycle, but I couldn't pinpoint it. The message is not really helpful here - generally this is one of the errors I hate the most ;) So yes, I am not sure if it is a bug or not. But in case someone else stumbels over this he might find this issue helpful.

@ptziegler I was a bit fed up, so I removed the entire directory 😁, will have to check your proposal as soon as I set it up again!

I'm trying to remember how I tracked it down. Indeed it was kind of painful.

But it seems to me this has a cycle:

ch.ngiger.utilities.comm

Are you using package imports or bundle requirements?

One thing I found helpful was to look at the plug-in dependencies in the explorer and see if those looks correct...

At least in our workspace, the cycle was usually introduced by the test fragments. For example, Plugin B requires Plugin A, but the test fragment for Plugin A requires Plugin B. And suddenly, Plugin B is added as a dependency to Plugin A, leading to this cycle.

@col-panic I'll try to take a quick look here, just wondering from your screenshot your are using an mixture of maven and java projects is this intentional? It might be possibly that PDE+m2e adding different things that lead to some cycles.

And I think this is also a platform issue: The error message is really hard to understand....

I found the reason that Eclipse complains all the way about One or more cycles were detected. It was the import bundle ch.elexis.core.data in ch.ngiger.utilities.comm. Funny thing - there is no circular dependency there, none of the bundles depends on ch.ngiger.utilities.comm - i don't know why removing this dependency "fixes" the problem.

@laeubi none of the bundles involved provided me with a different output than The dependency graph of this plug-in does not contain cycles

@laeubi yes PDE+m2e is delibarete - I'm re-using the bundles in a pure maven project without the osgi part.

It was the import bundle ch.elexis.core.data in ch.ngiger.utilities.comm. Funny thing - there is no circular dependency there, none of the bundles depends on ch.ngiger.utilities.comm - i don't know why removing this dependency "fixes" the problem.

Can try to compare the resolved dependencies between states? On the other hand if the dependency is not needed its good to remove it anyways! I'll checkout the repo to see if I can spot something.

@merks gitlab.medelexis.ch is an internal repository containing commercial bundles. One should only use the Elexis part, not the Medelexis part! 👍 "cycles from hell" ❤️
