Workaround to use a space as parameter

Is there a proper way or workaround to use the space character as sole input for a parameter?

Simplified example:
Command: sed -e :a -e '$!N;s/<newline=\n>/<replace_with= >/;ta' <filename>
Description: Replace newline characters

Hmm I'll have to check what the current status is but at a high level, this is something that would make sense - it should be supported. So even if current behavior doesn't support this, I'd be happy to accept a PR that modifies it. It'll probably be an easy change, and we can add a test for it.
