I'll be shutting down my GitHub Sponsors profile shortly. I'm not done with open source, by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think this model is the right one to sustain open source development, and I don't want to drain the pool's resources away from other open source developers who need them.
The use of sponsorships and pooled (or distributed) donations has been an interesting experiment in the open source world. I personally tried a combination of Tidelift, GitHub Sponsors, and thanks.dev, to see how they work and whether this could be a viable funding model for my own open source contributions.
I never had any expectations that I'd be able to quit my job and work on open source full-time, but I did hope I could take a few unpaid days away from my day job each month to work on open source. Unfortunately, I never earned enough from contributions to do that, but my sponsors did buy me several drinks each month, and I really appreciate that. π π» βοΈ
So, please, if you were considering sponsoring me, give the money to another open source developer, instead. There are a lot of great open source developers out there, and I suggest sponsoring one (or more!) from a group that's underrepresented in tech.
So long (not really), and thanks for all the fish! π¬ π¬ π¬
Cheers,
Ben
