should we remove support for inline consolidated metadata? #3709
Description
recent changes to the Zarr V3 spec have made our formerly-compliant implementation of inline consolidated metadata no longer compliant. See zarr-developers/zarr-specs#371 for an issue in zarr specs about this. I don't think Zarr python should create invalid Zarr data, so I am opening this issue to track removal of our support for inline consolidated metadata.
My preferred outcome would be for the spec to revert the breaking change that made consolidated metadata invalid. See a PR to this effect here. But since there has been no response to the issue or PR in zarr-specs, I think it's time to have the discussion here.
xarray devs in particular should take note!
