Should we think about how this will work with our proposed PS cmdlets for authoring config? For example, in PS,
-Version 1.2.3means=1.2.3, but requiring it in PS would make it not idiomatic PS. So one option is to accept that in PS1.2.3gets transformed to=1.2.3in the config which seems acceptable to me, but just want to think about this before we're locked into it.There was a problem hiding this comment.

I think there's three options to I see:
We can break from current design and make the implicit operator
=, but this requires us to munge input strings, including when a requirement defines multiple operators. This further moves us from the parsing behaviors of Rust's implementation, which is probably okay but requires more complexity both in implementation and for documenting - which is manageable, to be clear. We can make the PowerShell parameter for version requirements convert
1.2.3into=1.2.3making this a special case that doesn't exist in DSC. This would feel immediately idiomatic for PowerShell users but we would still need to handle other requirements like-RequireVersion '^1.2, <1.7'.We define a custom type for a DSC semantic version requirement and let users construct them from strings or arrays of comparators, e.g.
This requires more work but is eventually necessary for ensuring PowerShell users are defining valid requirements. In this model I don't think we need to convert the version requirement to use equals as the implicit operator. We can functionally reimplement the logic for validating the requirement in DSC.
