Rebased this PR onto the latest main and resolved the merge conflicts. The branch is now mergeable again.

It looks like the new workflow runs for this fork-based PR are currently in action_required state and have not started any jobs yet, so they may be waiting for maintainer approval before CI can proceed.

Closing this because the Select grouping work has since landed on main in a more complete form. Current main already includes Select.Group, Select.GroupLabel, follow-on Select API/docs/tests work, and merging this branch now would move the code backwards relative to main.
